Put some “green” in your Holidays

Here are some great ideas for things you can do to put a little more “green” in your Holiday celebrations:

Holiday Decorating Ideas

  • Take part in Kansas City Wildlands’ annual Cedar Tree Event. The Eastern Red Cedar is an invasive species that threatens native prairie lands. You can join the effort to remove these trees from area parks AND take a home a tree to decorate for the holidays by joining other volunteers at Shawnee Mission Park on December 3. Find more information here.
  • LED holiday lights use 80% less electricity than incandescent and stay cool to the touch so they’re safer to use. As you replace your old lights, choose LED’s.
  • After the holidays, don’t forget to recycle your tree. There are drop-off locations throughout the metro but if you need some help finding one, check here.

A Fun Holiday Project

  • Have fun decorating an outdoor tree with ornaments that will feed the birds. This is a great project you can do to entertain the kids and grand-kids over the winter break. Make decorations that will dress up an outdoor tree while it attracts colorful birds for weeks to come. Find some ideas here.

Gift Giving

  • Skip the non-recyclable wrapping paper for gifts and get creative with these ideas for dressing up your holiday presents. Really cool ideas here.
  • How about throwing a second-hand clothing swap party? A fun way to clean out your closet, grab some new-to-you fashions, spend time with friends, reduce your consumption-induced environmental impact, and save money on holiday gifts! With all that going for it, what’s stopping you? Find more info here.

Food
